Obama On 'You Didn't Build That' Remark: 'I Have Regrets For My Syntax'

The minute President Barack Obama uttered the words 'you didn't build that,' the GOP latched on, using the remark to attack the president's campaign ' even going to make it a centerpiece of their convention last week. Asked about the comment, Obama said, while he 'regrets' the syntax, he stands by the point he was making.

'Obviously, I have regrets for my syntax,' Obama said in an interview with WWBT-Richmond. 'But not for the point, because everyone who was there watching knows exactly what I was saying.'

The Obama campaign has argued that the remark, in context, makes sense and isn't the attack on free enterprise that Republicans have characterized it to be. The comment in question:

'If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business ' you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.'

Republicans have hammered home their attack on those words, with Mitt Romney saying it's not a gaffe, it's the president's true philosophy 'that if you have a business, you didn't build it, someone else did that.'

In the same interview, Obama insisted that the country is better off today than four years ago, conceding that 'obviously, we have much more to do.'

  • But according to Mitt Romney, corporations are people' Are all businesses people? Are Americans building people? ARE THEY ROBOTS?! OH, GOD, THE APOCALYPSE IS NEAR.

  • Took a month to come up with that, huh?
    No one believes you Barry.
    You've lied too much.
You accidentally let the mask slip.
No speech will get you reelected .
    We're sick of your lectures.
You're a government employee, and when you don't do the job, yo've got to go.

  • Poor photo choice. It should show him at ease, laughing.

  • Continue to support the party where a Two-Thirds Majority is created by a 50/50 split. #PartyOfThePeople

  • Well, that simply makes no mathematical sense. The people voted in a two-thirds majority for Democrats, not half and half.

  • 'Obama On 'You Didn't Build That' Remark: 'I Have Regrets For My Syntax'
    Bill Clinton: 'They're taxing what?'

  • What happened to the 'I won' guy? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/17862.html

    Yep, he's losing.

  • For someone who's supposedly 'the greatest orator of modern times', Obama (and his sycophants) sure have to spend a lot of time explaining what he really meant. LOL!

  • I guess I shouldn't be amazed, but I am, that the Romney campaign is building their entire case for election on a syntax error. The Republicans know better ' they just don't care. And they're banking on enough people not really paying attention, or believing what they WISH were true, to pull off the lie. I hope Romney tries to make hay of this during the debates and Obama just cuts him off at the knees.

  • The dumbest of the dumb knows the statement was taken out of context. If he had used a different syntax, the Rebums would have found another way to attack.

  • U retarded?

If you have an opponent that outright, provably lies about what you say, then by extension you need to educate the stupid people that will believe them on what you ACTUALLY said'

This is the same type of stupid argument you people make about how Obama has failed to turn anything around, while at the same time doing everything you can to STOP him from turning anything around.

You cause the problem, and then blame the problem on others.

Seriously, I think it's time we start looking at the GOP as enemies of this country. Their obstructionism is hurting the US.

  • Is he?

Cuz last I checked, Clinton pretty much mopped up the floor with the GOP and handed Obama a win, and last time I checked, your candidate was MITT ROMNEY the liberal (so by extension you people lose either way), and last time I checked, despite how hard this economy is, Obama leads the electoral college by a good amount, even by Rove's map.

    Soooooooooooooo, he's losing'. how?
