On Sunday's Up with Chris Hayes, The Nation's Jeremy Scahill, during the panel's discussion about President Barack Obama's foreign policy record, took a critical look at MSNBC's coverage of the Democratic National Convention.
Scahill noted that Obama used the killing of Osama bin Laden 'as a football to spike on the national stage' ' adding that the president used the achievement in 'a jingoistic way.' The Daily Beast's Michelle Goldberg begged to differ, arguing that it would have been 'political malpractice' to avoid mention of the bin Laden raid. There are two different things, she said: The discussion about the president's foreign policy and the discussion about how they're using that foreign policy 'to win a very important election.'
'But many of the media discussions, including here on MSNBC, about foreign policy during the convention felt like we were watching an Obama for America meet up,' Scahill argued. 'Not an actual serious critique of this president's most egregious aspects of his foreign policy, where you do see that of the Republicans.'
On that note, he added, 'There's all of this going after Romney, and I think that's completely legitimate ' but some of the core issues of this president's national security policy are not being debated. And I'm sorry, but watching John Kerry and Joseph Biden criticizing the war in Iraq? They voted for the war in Iraq.'
Scahill went on to decry 'revisionism' and 'jingoism' ' noting that he was talking about 'life and death issues.'
Take a look, via MSNBC:

Well, isn't that refreshing, that a fellow 'liberal' can say something negative about a 'liberal' network. Ever happen at Faux News? Not likely.
-
As a liberal, I get so frustrated at MSNBC sometimes. They seem to position themselves as being as much as a joke as Fox sometimes rather then being a network that deals in facts, despite the fact that they have Rachel Maddow, who is probably one of the best and most intelligent pundits in the media today. I wish she would go to Current once her time at MSNBC is up.
I actually found Current's coverage to be much better, aside from that awful half-screen social media graphic that they felt determined to push. Despite it being a clearly progressive network, I feel that Granholm, Fugalsang, and Cenk are really good with presenting the facts without injecting too much spin in one direction or another. I just hope they can get their HD feed up and running soon.
I flipped back and forth between them and C-Span mostly and didn't even patronize the big networks. I just wish BBC World News would have done more coverage of the conventions.

What is this, a Fox News headline?
Mediaite moves closer to becoming Fox Nation, by way of Gawker and HuffPost.
-
Goldberg's face tells the story. Liberals are such hypocrites.
-
Well this doesn't really 'report' on what Scahill was talking about this morning. This was a 'throwaway' line and just shows what MEDIAITE 'focuses' on. OF COURSE, it was a convention supporting Obama. What Scahill was upset about this morning was the 'defense policy'. He wasn't willing to go all Obama and diss Romney. If anything he couldn't stand either ONE of their policies. C'mon. This little posting is garbage. If you want to talk COVERAGE among the networks, then let's.
-
Wow Jeremy ' tip of the hat to you. Unfortunately, prepare to be bashed on Twitter, here, and the Dumbacrat Blunderground for having the audacity of reminding liberals of facts they would rather soon forget.
-
Scahill serves that much-needed dose of reality that the Dems are centrist party of cowards.
-
You get frustrated over what? That occasionally, a 'thinking' liberals comes on the show and doesn't offer glowing and uncritical praise of the new and improved progressive Democrat Party? That someone would dare offer a negative comment, actually criticizing the Democrat platform or its leaders?
Don't worry ' the rumors of Murdoch buying out MSNBC are totally unfounded.
-
What? I was agreeing with Scahill. Reading comprehension is hard, right?
-
scratch an empog and underneath you find a RWNJ
-
Fox News always has negative things to say about a liberal network or are you not paying attention?

Actually, all I really took away was your frustration and your reliance on getting your 'news' from Current TV. Kinda lost me after that.
One thing I will agree with ' while I don't like her politics, I do like Rachel. She's probably MSNBC's class act at the moment.

Republicans again trying to thread the needle. Obama being criticized by the far left proves the point that he's not some liberal extremist, but it doesn't stop him from being criticized as such. It's the same when righties try to straddle the fence over whether Obama plays golf all day and is lazy or is a Chicago thug stealing our freedom.
-
Damn you are stupid because clearly she was agreeing with Scahill.
-
Oh, don't get me wrong. For news, I don't bother with most US media outlets. I find BBC, CBC, or CNN International to be much better at presenting the facts straight-forward.
Just because I enjoy Current for political analysis doesn't mean that it's the only place that I turn to.
Very few US journalists are living up to their craft these days with the exception of Anderson Cooper (I've watched him since his days during Channel One), Rachel Maddow, Shep Smith, and Amy Goodman.

It's amazing how your bus keeps driving over people who have a legitimate point.
Odd really'..If you were in school ' the teacher would state 'uncleduke doesn't take criticism well'.
-
A principled, intellectually consistent progressive? What's next, Hamas wearing yarmulkes?
-
Clearly you have ADD.
-
Clearly I was being sardonic or are YOU too stupid to recognize that?
See ' two can play at this game?
-
Yea okay of course you were.

Imagine if a guest on Fox slammed the Republican convention. The sound would be turned off and the 'guest' escorted out of the the Fox building
