Bay Buchanan On Reports Of Trouble In Romney Camp: Base 'Energized,' But You Can't Make Everyone Happy

Romney campaign strategist Bay Buchanan stopped by the Daily Rundown set on Monday morning, where she and host Chuck Todd discussed the reported tension within Romney's campaign.

'This story is just ridiculous,' she told Todd, referring to a Politico piece published Sunday. 'I have been, as you said, in many presidential campaigns, and the key to a good one ' and Governor Romney is absolutely clear about this ' he doesn't want 'yes people.'' She also described the recent Republican National Convention as an overall success, with Governor Romney's speech having been 'well-received.'

But who, Todd wondered, leaks an excerpt of a speech that hadn't been given? 'What is going on there?' he asked.

Buchanan countered by asking, 'Who writes that story? Who cares?' She followed this up by saying that Romney experienced a 'bump' after the convention, and is faring well among Independent voters, voters in swing states, and female voters. Plus, she added, the base 'is energized.'

'What do you say to the conservative hand-wringers?' Todd asked her, name-checking the likes of Erick Erickson, Bill Kristol, and Jennifer Rubin.

Buchanan countered the many conservatives are thrilled with the ticket, particularly with the addition of VP pick Paul Ryan. That said, 'it's easy to sit on the sidelines and have complaints,' she said. 'Every single campaign, everybody wants to be campaign manager, you know? They want to think that they're the best.'

Later, when asked about Romney's foreign policy messaging, Buchanan insisted that Obama's foreign policy has failed, just as his economic policy has. Plus, she added, it's not as if Erick Erickson has been on their side this whole time and both Republicans and Democrats will have individuals within their respective parties that will 'never be happy.'

Have a look, via MSNBC:

  • Put a brave face on, Bay. It's only going to get worse.

  • for a barely watched, 'liburlly biased' news channel, MSNBC sure seems to have a ton of conservatives willing to come on the air and spew their talking points.

  • Bay threw Pat under the bus for Willard.

  • During the day they do. At night things are quiet a bit different.

  • I love the fact that Erick Erickson is considered an important conservative.

    The conservative movement is dead.

  • Bay Buchanan didn't use 1 fact in describing Mitt's current position in this campaign ' crazy

  • Baghdad Bob has nothing when it comes to lying when comparing it to the conservatives of this country.

  • Bay fails to mention that Clint Eastwood excited the base more than Romney. Maybe once he releases his secret plans for Middle East, China, and the economy evrybody will be excited.

  • this lady's stuck in a republican bubble'

  • Here's a fact about Romney that needs to be publicized (at 15:50 on the video):

Mitt Romney caught on 'hidden camera'

  • Romneys campaign is following the exact timeline of McCains. Pick right wing VP, have public meltdown, campaign team start infighting, press leaks. It has gone from ridiculous to pitiful.

  • Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.

  • Hey Bay, that wasn't a 'bump', that was a pothole. And it looks like the handling is shot' it's veering to the far right.

  • This kind of reminds me of what happened in 08, just that it's happening earlier this time. Republicans struggle to gain a secure foothole, then they fracture and start blaming each other before the election even happens. Happened with Palin going 'rogue,' and now it's happening to Romney's staff. Fascinating.

  • according to bay ' and btw, bay, once every 4 years they let you out of the crypt and you STILL look and sound like brother pat ' team mittens hired her to 'liaise with conservatives'. wow: if that's true, then that's yet another judgment about what a hapless mess team mittens is: hiring bay buchy to 'liaise with conservatives'.

  • point taken, but they go onto msnbc where they can in hopes of capturing some of those precious undecided indys.

thing is, those precious undecided indys are the really incredibly underinformed voters with the nuttiest misconceptions, and they sure ain't get any of those from watching cable tv. at most they catch the occasional show by big fat or one of the other shock talk jocks

  • bb IS a merkin 'conservative'

  • maybe so, but that's got nothing to do with this appearance. she's in business and part of the job she was hired to do entails her doing stuff like this. she sure thru up a lot of word salad at the end, which suggests she's paid by the meme.

  • First of all, I must say that Bay Buchanan is way more likeable and relatable than I think any other Romney surrogate I've seen on TV. That Sunununu guy and others just creep me out and do more harm than good when speaking on his behalf.
But my goodness. So much to unwrap. 'The majority of Americans feel that the governor has a very strong message on the economy'. Did anyone else laugh out loud a little?
Then a real corker, 'Why is there such strong Anti-American sentiment in the muslim world after all we've done'' That. Was. Hilarious!
Also laughable is the idea that Romney will command greater respect worldwide. Not to say it's impossible, but with the available evidence, it is currently a laughable premise.
Anti-American sentiment will remain in the Muslim world regardless of who is in charge (for both ligitimate and not-so legitimate reasons) AND, for crying out loud, there will always be anti-Muslim sentiment amongst a (I hope) minority in the U.S.!

  • Some of the dynamics are similar, but really, this is quite different. O was hope and change in 2008, now he's all stay the course and hope you don't change.

everyone's missing or avoiding the obvious points: 1) it was ALWAYS open to O to exploit the craptacularity of the Sonny Bushlioni era and the obstructionism of the Congressional Rubes, and, quel suprise that the 'great communicator' of 2008 has proven able to communicate those painfully obvious points in 2012, and 2) romney has ALWAYS been a terrible retail pol and largely dislikeable person.

so bear in mind that in 2008 obama beat out a LIKEABLE Rube nominee, plus a veep nominee who as Paul Schaffer himself said, that's one good lookin' babe, whereas all obama has to beat out in 2012 is the most established UN-likeable major party preznit nominee in, oh, 80 years at least and some guy who's main hobby is playing dexter with old folks and their benefits.

  • I like it.

  • Brilliantly stated!
