As our celebrity-focused cousin Gossip Cop reported earlier today, an attorney for Tom Cruise has sent a letter to National Enquirer publisher American Media, bashing the tabloid magazine for referring to the actor as an 'abusive' 'monster' in a recent cover piece about his marriage to and highly-publicized divorce from actress Katie Holmes.
In the letter ' which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter ' attorney Bert Fields threatens to sue the magazine over what he refers to as its 'disgraceful and lurid' story. Among the claims included in the story, the magazine writes that Cruise abused, punished and humiliated Holmes, and held their daughter, Suri, in a 'tiny, windowless room' for five months.
Fields added that the cover story will result in 'hundreds of millions of dollars of professional and personal damages, for which we intend to hold American Media, and everyone who participated in the perpetuation of this scurrilous attack, jointly and severally liable.'
'Mr. Cruise is certainly not a 'monster,'' writes Fields. 'He is a caring father, a hardworking actor and, above all, an honest, decent man.' Furthermore, he calls for the magazine to 'retract each and every one of your false allegations about Mr. Cruise with the same prominence and emphasis as you gave your original false and defamatory assertions.'
