MSNBC Guest: Romney Went Into NAACP Conference 'Wanting To Get Booed For Something'

On Tuesday, a guest on MSNBC's Now with Alex Wagner suggested that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney went into the NAACP speech with the expectation and desire to get booed by that audience. The guest said that when that did occur after he said he would repeal 'Obamacare,' Romney appeared to be enjoying the reaction.

David Corn, columnist with The Nation, praised Romney's speech saying that he did not make any missteps like saying, for example, that some of his 'best friends are African-American NASCAR owners.'

'He wants to be able to say, 'hey, I can go talk to people who I don't agree with. I can get booed and I can be reasonable,'' said Corn of Romney's objectives ahead of the NAACP speech. 'I can tell them what I think in a polite, respectful way. I can take their criticisms and just show them that I care about what they think.'

Corn said that approach would work well with voters who are on the fence about the election and who still do not know who Romney is at this stage of the race.

New York Times Reporter Hugo Lindgren said that Romney appeared to expect that he would receive a negative reception from the NAACP audience.

'That moment where the Obamacare line ' he had this little, kind of, George W. Bush smirk on his face,' said Lindgren. 'He kind of new he was going to get ' he kind of wanted it. And he sort of enjoyed it a little bit.'

'He went in there wanting to get booed for something,' Lindgren concluded.

Fredrick Harris, author of The Price of the Ticket, said he disagreed with Lindgren. Romney was not seeking to secure his base with his NAACP address, said Harris, but he was attempting show independent voters that 'I'm not as bad as you think I am.'

  • It's clear to anyone that wants to know, that he was there to show he has balls. Tell the what the Right wings nut jobs would want to tell those folks at NAACP, if they have the chance.

  • how many times has this been that Romney has said he would repeal Obamacare? He's said in the past, he said it today, and he'll say it tomorrow. why should he change his message just for them? Isn't telling the audience that your standing in front of only what they want to hear called 'pandering'? Keep telling the truth Romney and don't change your message for anybody.

  • Liberals get testy when their free handouts are taken away.  Moochers!

  • King Obama won't go because he might get booed himself.

It's not like he's doing anything but campaigning. He's got a plane and he's got the time, but the fear keeps him away.

  • He was received quite well, despite the two boos. He got a standing O at the end. It was one of his best speeches, so far.

Cleaver, however, saying basically that Romney shouldn't have criticized Obama to a black audience was beyond the pale.

  • Along with our elderly who rely on medicare to survive.

  • He says it now, but in 2008 he argued in favor of the mandate. Since he did not win, and was criticized for his 'successful' healthcare reform in MA, he changed his position.

  • He would love to get some bills through the Congress, but the GOP side there has stated their intention to block everything. So he may as well be campaigning. Of course the GOP side, and Mitt in particular, have been doing that since 2009.

  • No, that was too easy. Having 'balls' would be supporting the healthcare reform idea, the mandate, that he proposed and passed in MA when he was governor.
