New Study: 'People At The Extremes Are Happier Than Political Moderates'

Arthur C. Brooks, author of Gross National Happiness, explored how peoples' political beliefs influence their happiness in a New York Times column Saturday, and revealed that conservatives are happier than liberals, although he points out it could have more to do with demographics than which cable news channel someone prefers.

'Scholars on both the left and right have studied this question extensively, and have reached a consensus that it is conservatives who possess the happiness edge,' Brooks wrote. 'Many data sets show this. For example, the Pew Research Center in 2006 reported that conservative Republicans were 68 percent more likely than liberal Democrats to say they were 'very happy' about their lives. This pattern has persisted for decades. The question isn't whether this is true, but why.'

One possibility is that conservatives are more likely to be married and religious, two factors that lead to happiness, according to Brooks. More than half of conservatives are married, compared to a third of liberals, and studies have shown that married people are eighteen percent more likely to be happy than an unmarried person of similar demographics. Religious conservatives outnumber religious liberals nearly four-to-one, and religious people are nearly twice as likely to consider themselves happy.

The happiest conservatives were also the more extreme, Brooks said, but the same held true for those who considered themselves extremely liberal. Moderates on either side of the spectrum aren't as happy, which is unfortunate for Brooks, who considers himself an independent.

'People at the extremes are happier than political moderates,' Brooks wrote. 'Correcting for income, education, age, race, family situation and religion, the happiest Americans are those who say they are either 'extremely conservative' (48 percent very happy) or 'extremely liberal' (35 percent). Everyone else is less happy, with the nadir at dead-center 'moderate' (26 percent).'

  • In other words, most men with nothing would rather protect the
possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor

  • Of course a political loon is the happiest of all. Life is much simpler when you can just yell talking points when faced with disagreements. After all, you are ALWAYS right and the 'other guys' are ALWAYS WRONG!!!

  • Wait a minute, they're happy and married?  That proves they're liars.

  • barack obama doesn't seem like a happy guy to me

  • Well, duh. The folks on the extreme right and left are happy because they are being pandered to intensely. Moderates are not because we are the ones stuck with the mess the extremes have made.

Moderates are the ones looking at the 2 tired corrupt political parties and wondering when any of these clowns will ever get back to actually governing instead of the endless sore loser campaigning they do now.
