Why Meghan McCain May Consider Switching Political Parties

Daily Beast writer and proud Arizonan Meghan McCain is loyal to the Republican Party, but has been so disappointed in its handling of social issues over the past few years that she might become an Independent in 2016.

In a new column titled, 'Why the Republican Party Needs to Wake Up,' the 28-year-old states that she felt really let down when former presidential candidate Mitt Romney lost the election last week. The defeat, she says, inexplicably brought her to tears, which made her realize she was crying more for the GOP than the former Massachusetts governor:

There was no reason for me to have such an emotional reaction to Romney's loss'Looking back to last week, I think that I was mourning something else. For the last four years, writing on this website, I've been calling for the Republican Party to come to terms with reality and modernize. Last Tuesday, Mitt Romney lost'and he lost big. As Republicans, we lost again. I felt sad, exhausted, beaten down, and heartbroken. It was the first time that I considered that the Republican Party, which I love so much, might die.

And if it does kick the bucket, she doesn't feel welcome to go down with it, as she has been crucified by fellow conservatives on countless occasions for eschewing the extreme right, championing gay marriage, and supporting a woman's right to choose (even though she's pro-life):

I know there are many out there, especially in the more conservative sphere, that regard me with disdain. I don't fit into the traditional Republican box that the wingnuts who have hijacked my party think all Republicans should. For the last four years, I've been calling for Republicans to stop concentrating on social issues.

So, Republicans, if you don't 'accept the changing face of America and change with it,' McCain says, you will 'continue to become more isolated and irrelevant.' She's exhausted from spending her 'adult life fighting for change from inside the Republican Party,' and while she's happy to keep sticking up for the GOP, she worries the Tea Party has given the party as a whole a very bad name. Hence, she could be ready to make a tough decision before the next election cycle:

If I don't see some changes in the next four years, I'm going to consider registering as an Independent in 2016.

I don't like the sound of that! Redeem yourselves already, guys. I'm tired of the nationwide Obama lovefest.

  • My opinion of Meghan McCain aside:

    1. Can you really fault her?

    though I should point out

    2. The republican party has been taken over by religious groups for the better part of 30 years

    3. Theres a reason independents are growing and the party bases are shrinking, at some point you just get exasperated with parties who demand you adhere to their ideology in every aspect, even when parts of that ideology conflict with logic and reason.
