Egyptian President's Spokesman In Relationship Scandal With Female Journalist Who Covers The Regime

» comments

Egyptian journalist Abeer Abdelmajid was fired from her job reporting on Mohammed Morsi's administration for daily newspaper Youm7, after another paper revealed that she was in a 'customary marriage' with the president's spokesman Yasser Ali.

In Egypt, a 'customary marriage' means that the couple is married without officially registering with authorities, but the union still satisfies Shariah law.

The paper that published the story, al-Fagr, was sued by the spokesman, who accused it of spreading lies. He also denied any existing relationship with Abeer.

But soon after, journalist Abeer countered in court. She claimed the paper's report was true and asked for official court recognition of her relationship with the president's spokesman.

The presidential spokesman's lawyer appeared on an Egyptian television station and denied the marriage of his client to the Abeer, adding that her claims 'lacked any proof.' But journalist Abeer's lawyer says he has documents, personal photographs, and recordings of Abeer and the spokesman together.
