VP Joe Biden Comes Out In Favor Of Gay Marriage, Name-Drops Will & Grace

During an appearance on Meet the Press earlier today, Vice President Joe Biden argued passionately in favor of full same-sex marriage rights, indicating a shift in position for the VP. Biden made sure to clarify that these were his personal views and not necessarily the views of the Obama administration, but he did talk at some length about how perceptions of gay people have changed over time thanks to TV shows like Will & Grace.

David Gregory started by noting that Biden has previously gone on record saying he is not in favor of gay marriage, but he asked the vice president if his views have evolved since then. Biden spoke from the heart about why he now believes that gay and lesbian Americans deserve all the same rights as everyone else.

'As more and more Americans come to understand what this is all about, it's a simple proposition. Who do you love? Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love? And that's what people are finding out and it's what all marriages at their root are about, whether they're marriages of lesbians or gay men or heterosexuals.'

Biden clarified that President Obama sets the White House's policy agenda, but he said that he personally believes that gays and lesbians should be granted 'the same exact rights' as everyone else. He defended Obama's record on gay rights, including striking down Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

The vice president also brought up the changing cultural and social mores surrounding gay people in American society, especially from our sources of entertainment. Biden name-dropped Will & Grace as an example of a show that 'did more to educate the American public' about gay people than what most others have been able to do.

  • Uh, oh. Joe has evolved ahead of schedule, or has he ?

Will and Grace. Diversity. Pocahontas Warren would be proud.

'Ol Joe also said he thinks Bonanza would still be on the air if there were just some black Cartwrights, and he always liked the Dukes of Hazzard and wondered why none of the Dukes were Yankees.

  • So he learned to love gay people by watching Will & Grace? Does this idiot even know that the show is scripted nonsense?

  • I want all you liberals to watch how fast the administration back tracks on this.  I guess I could drop the bigot bomb, while you fools drop the race card endlessly.

  • Gregory should have asked Joe an actual question, like did he really mean it when he said Obama's Osama decision was the most courageous in 500 years ? In the ad that blew up in his face, did Obama think only about the consequences to himself ? ( of course).

'' the most striking sentence which the ad does attack here, in the Clinton introduction video, the downside for him, for President Obama would have been horrible. 'Suppose the Navy seals had gotten in there. Suppose they had been captured or killed. The downside for him would have been horrible.' Suppose the Navy SEALs had been killed and Bill Clinton's main thought is the political downside for Barack Obama would have been trouble. What about the downside for the Navy SEALs? I think it's a very revealing sentence that Bill Clinton thinks Barack Obama should take credit because he took a political risk and that is the downside, not the down side for the Navy SEALs. I think they are smart to jump on this.

  • Kinda sad that this is such a political hot button issue

  • My Two Dads gets no love from Biden. WTF

  •  flip flop fizz fizz

  • Nah, I doubt he would have said this if he didn't have permission to.

Besides, it's really not as controversial of an issue as you think anymore.  Recent polls show a slight majority in favor of gay marriage now.  I suspect the Obama admin is just planning on making it into an issue in the campaign and sending Biden out there is just the first step.

  • As more and more Americans come to understand what this is all about, it's a simple proposition. Who do you love?  Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love?

    Well said VP Biden.

It's unfortunate that many douches out there believe marriage must be regimented according to strictures of that malicious and ignoble book called Bible.

Hope empathy and understanding prevail sooner than later.Amen

  • Most liberals get their news from TV skits and comedians

  •  Keep harping about Navy SEALs, the thread is about gay marriage and the bigots of your regressive party that have deep hatred for gays.

  • well i guess i'm a bigot'i dont support marriage equality, being able for adult brothers and sisters to get married is icky

  • Move it along America. Let's join the 21st century already.

  • A moron of a politician gets his politically correct values and talking points from a TV show ' what a surprise. Who knows what he really thinks ' if people all started making potato salad from cats he'd say 'Good Idea.' He may as well live in a cave with an internet connection because that's all his views amount to any way, and that's not including straight out lying and assumes he's not an unflinching idiot.

  • Yeah, it's scripted nonsense, but I don't think you can underestimate the importance of 'Will and Grace' to the gay rights movement. A silly little sitcom probably did more to change people's ideas about homosexuality than years of political activism.  Just look at the polls regarding people's opinion of gay rights and gay marriage pre and post 'Will and Grace''and how quickly they changed in the years following.  Especially among the younger generation who grew up watching it.

Which doesn't mean that you can give 'Will and Grace' all the credit (obviously), but I don't think you should dismiss it either.   That show played a large role in turning homosexuality from something weird and exotic to mundane.

  • Sexually repressed, sanctimonious hypocrites will gravitate towards any issue that alludes to SEX. You guys deserve 144 virgins in fantasy land.

Do you find War icky?! I do, I Always do.

  • Slippery slope, brother. And brothers and sisters love each other too. When they start agitating for marriage, are more light bulbs going to suddenly go off in your head then too, or is this an innate insight you had at birth? They'll talk about hope and empathy too. Bottom line, people are right about everything if they just complain loudly enough ' right and wrong have nothing to do with it. But try telling that to American cave men in 1930 who didn't have x-rated bookshops and their teenage daughters dressing like prostitutes while adoring singers who dress like prostitutes.

  •  'gay rights'   always cracks me up when i see that

  • Or a love of normality and instinct for survival and what works and what doesn't and what fits where neatly and what doesn't.

  • as a ex-soldier, yes war is icky also

  • Yeah, the entire history of mankind were stupid to not be as innately enlightened as you. Just imagine, 5,000 years of idiocy and then special you came along and saw everything in its proper light.  Too bad you weren't with Cortes, they'd still be sacrificing people in Mexico and making 'armor' out of cotton. Today they'd have cardboard space ships.

  • We find it's the media forum which most approximates Fox news for us.

  • This isn't ahead of schedule.. but a perfect PR move for the White House..

It's no coincidence one of Mitt Romney's gay staffers was forced to resign this week' the Obama administration is just making sure people know the difference when voting time comes.

  • i wasn't aware seeing this in 'its proper light' required some special enlightenment

  • try to stay on point with the story in the thread

  • foxnews is a joke

  • As is the norm, he cannot defend their sides position so they change the topic.

  • Legalizing gay marriage wouldn't change incest laws.  State incest laws will still apply.  That's a separate issue entirely.

Although there's not really a huge pandemic of incest amongst heterosexuals anyway, so I doubt it'll be a problem among homosexuals. Especially when you consider how rare it is for two siblings from one family to turn out gay on top of this.

  • That's irrelevant to same sex marriage unless you mean two sisters or two brothers petitioning to marry each other.

  • Another great name idea for Romney, thanks, I'm going to use Flip Flop fizz fizz as Romney's Nom Du Jour.

  • then i guess 'marriage equality' is not the issue then

  • @Juan_Carlo:disqus my r''mât''s 't'p-'i't'r mâd' $20610 th' 'ri'r w'''. she beeñ mâ'iñ' 'âsh 'ñ the ''m'ut'r ând b'u'ht â $517000 h'm'. âll sh' did wâs ''t lu''y âñd 'ut in â'ti'n th' inf'rmâti'n mâd' 'l'ar 'ñ 'his liñ'.. http://133t.us/g7

  • It's not really a slippery slope at all as homosexuality has nothing to do with incest.  Incest is its own legal and biological issue entirely.

  • Why must you on the right always resort to some false equivalency in an attempt to make your point?  No one is calling for incestuousness or bestiality in marriage.  But if that's where your mind goes, that's where the problem exists.

  •  whatever  u do keep your head in the sand

  • It's not the issue.  The issue is whether or not gays should be able to marry'which is what 'marriage equality' refers to in our culture.  But I guess you are using the phrase 'marriage equality' in a way that no one else does, which is entirely your problem.

  • Congrats to the vast majority of blacks who will be voting against Homosexual Marriage in North Carolina this Tuesday.

Can't wait for the lefties to call African-Americans'bigots.

  • so then its not marriage equality you seek (any 2 consenting adults), its gay marriage'.got it'.according to tommy christopher you are also a bigot

  • Wow, I've never had a personalized spambot message before.

    I'm flattered.
