Cue Outrage? Local Pizza Chain Gives Free Pizza For Ordering In Spanish

CBS Dallas reports that Pizza Patrón, a southwestern pizza chain, will offer free pizza to anyone who orders their food in Spanish.

The promotion, called 'Pizza Por Favor,' will run on June 5th between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time, and will award customers a free large-sized pepperoni pizza for the Spanish-speaking deed.

The chain previously generated controversy in 2007 when they accepted Mexican Pesos as payment, garnering the attention of everyone from Stephen Colbert to Fox News.

The company said in a press release that this new 'Pizza Por Favor' promotion is an effort to honor the 'positive force of change immigrants have made in communities throughout America.'

Uh-oh! Cue the conservative outrage.

The English-as-official-language debate has subsided in the last year, with only a few passing mentions from the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. But perhaps this little story will awaken the Tom Tancredos of the right to come out and condemn this popular southwestern pizza chain.

This begs the question: How long until throngs of people in American flag-print shorts and 'Welcome to America, Now Speak English!' tee shirts show up and protest outside their local Pizza Patrón?

  • Somebody has some 'splainin' to do.

  • I would fly there and order a pizza in spanish, if I knew Tancredo was watching.

  • Yep. Cue the outrage over pretty much nothing except a business promoting itself with its market.

I can't wait for all the free market types to grip the free market.

  • Texas is like a whole other country.  Because conservative Texans could give a rat's ass about speaking spanish.  It's a basic neccessity to get through some days.

  • How about a free pizza for those ordering in Italian?   Italian immigrants have been a positive force of change in communities throughout America.

  • What would your feelings be if they said, order in Spanish and the price is double?

  • Who cares what a private business does? We live in a multiracial, multiethnic society. Those who favor English as the official language in our public sphere do so out of the desire to have a common thread binding all Americans. The ones who would suffer from such a policy by and large are those here illegally.
