Republican Congressman: Immigrants Are Like Dogs, You Want Only 'The Pick Of The Litter'

» comments

At a town hall event Monday in rural Iowa, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) compared immigrants to dogs, telling his constituents that the United States should only allow the best immigrants similar to the way dog buyers choose the 'pick of the litter.'

King brought up his experience raising bird dogs to explain how the immigrant-dog metaphor works: 'You want a good bird dog? You want one that's going to be aggressive? Pick the one that's the friskiest, the one that's engaged the most, and not the one that's over there sleeping in the corner.'

King said you should avoid picking the lazy dogs/immigrants: 'If you want a pet to sleep on the couch, get the one that's sleeping in the corner.'

'You get the pick of the litter and you got yourself a pretty good bird dog,' he concluded.

Yikes. (Hey commenters: If you were an immigrant, which dog breed would you be?)

Check out the clip below (h/t Salon):

Unsurprisingly, Rep. King has a longstanding record of comparing immigrants to animals.

In 2006, on the House floor, the Iowan congressman put together a plastic demo of his desired Mexican border wall, complete with electrified wire because 'we do that with livestock all the time.'
