This year's slate of Oscar nominations features plenty of deserving nominees. Big movies like Steven Spielberg 's Lincoln , with 12 nominations, and Ang Lee 's Life of Pi , with 11, top the list. But it's also great to see a small film like Beasts of the Southern Wild score nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress for youngest-ever 9-year-old nominee Quvenzhané Wallis .
As always there were many films and artists who were left out by the Academy. Below are the 13 who I believe should have been included this year.

Moonrise Kingdom for Best Picture This year, the Academy only nominated 9 films for the top prize. If they could have squeezed in one more, it should have been Wes Anderson 's genuinely funny and touching Moonrise Kingdom . Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director Zero Dark Thirty was one the most praised and most controversial films of the year. It scored five of the most-valued nominations, but the first female director to win an Oscar (for 2008's The Hurt Locker ) didn't make the cut. Ben Affleck for Best Director Argo was Ben Affleck 's third and arguably best film as a director. It made the Best Picture cut, but Affleck failed to secure a Best Director nod. Quentin Tarantino for Best Director Django Unchained is yet another Best Picture nominee that doesn't have a nominated director. John Hawkes for Best Actor John Hawkes getting left out for The Sessions probably allowed The Master 's Joaquin Phoenix to sneak into this category. So it's hard to complain too much, but it was surprising that the Academy chose not to reward Hawke's portrayal of paraplegic Mark O'Brien. Jean-Louis Trintignant for Best Actor It was great to see Amour 's Emmanuelle Riva score a Best Actress nomination, but she never could have delivered the performance she did without her onscreen husband. Marion Cotillard for Best Actress Marion Cotillard 's performance in Rust and Bone wasn't widely seen, but it was widely praised for her work as a woman who loses her legs. Leslie Mann for Best Actress Despite Melissa McCarthy 's welcome nomination last year for Bridesmaids , comedic actors rarely get rewarded come Oscar time. But it would have been nice to see the Academy give some love to Mann for her stand-out role in husband Judd Apatow's This Is 40 . Samuel L. Jackson for Best Supporting Actor Samuel L. Jackson delivered a seriously brave performance (that he's been forced to defend on the press tour) in Django Unchained Javier Bardem for Best Supporting Actor Javier Bardem was the scariest Bond villain in decades in Skyfall , complete with homoerotic urges towards his nemesis. Matthew McConaughey for Best Supporting Actor Matthew McConaughey really laid it all out on the table in Magic Mike and was definitely a fan favorite in this category. Maggie Smith for Best Supporting Actress For those used to watching Maggie Smith on Downton Abbey , her performance in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was both refreshing and further proof of her range. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry for Best Documentary One of the most important documentaries of the year profiled Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei over several years. The fact that it was Alison Klayman's first film makes it all the more impressive. '
