A new HuffPost/YouGov poll finds that only one in five Americans believe the government's war on drugs has been worth the cost. The poll questioned both Democrats and Republicans and overall, 53 percent of Americans say the war on drugs has not been worth it. Only 19 percent believe it has been, with another 28 percent undecided.
The poll also found that more Americans disapprove of President Obama's handling of drug policy than approve, 39 percent to 30 percent. Democrats and Republicans don't support the war in almost equal measure: Dems think it wasn't worth it 46 percent to 24 percent and Republicans 45 percent to 25 percent.
Independents are by far the least pleased with the drug war, saying it wasn't worth the costs by a margin of 65 percent to 11 percent.
HuffPost notes that the term 'costs' was not defined, so respondents could have been considering both qualitative and quantitative costs.
The poll was conducted between January 14 and 15 among 1,000 U.S. adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
